The “Across the Horizon” series sets the goal of bringing together a like-minded community of instrumental pioneers and encouraging them to explore beyond their normal pathways, taking them, and their fans, into previously unexplored territories. By choosing a group of artist/curators each year and asking them to bring forth their favorite artist peers, we hope to broaden the landscape of instrumental music and emulate the kind of discovery that happens when artists sit down to chat about their influences. Finding connections, shared roots, and new inspiration in the process.

“The idea was simple, really. I wanted to start a music series where any artist that I invited to participate could also invite two other artists of their own choosing, no questions asked!” And that's how the musician Bob Holmes (of Northern Spy's ambient country trio SUSS) started what came to be the Across the Horizon music series. The concept was based on his long-running podcast and radio show of the same name, where he lets his co-hosts choose the music and playlists in every episode - artist driven community, curation and discovery. – Bob Holmes, SUSS and Across the Horizon Founder

Bob Holmes invites you into a realm where sound becomes landscape, and music transcends genre, inviting listeners to wander through vast, uncharted spaces of sonic possibility.
Across the Horizon showcases
Inspired by the music series, SUSS has hosted a number of Across the Horizon showcases, including the Big Ears Festival (Knoxville, TN), AmericanaFest (Nashville), and in Los Angeles and New York City. The shows are presented in a revue format that features artists performing a short set of their own material and then collaborating for once in a lifetime events. Past collaborations have included William Tyler, Mary Lattimore, Marisa Anderson, Alan Sparhawk, Nels Cline, Eucademix, Hayden Pedigo, Tift Merritt, Lily Fitts, Courtney Marie Andrews, Ken Pomeroy and many more!

“The process of making these albums comes across in the way they sound (with the completed Volume 1) and the way subscribers can hear them, as literally a sequence of three track drops until the final number of 24 is reached. The tracks are like ripples from stone tossed into a pond, spreading out and colliding with new things and changing course.”

“Holmes’ latest project is Across The Horizon, a collaboration with Northern Spy Records that brings onboard various like-minded artists drawn “from the wide landscape of instrumental music” (including Luke Schneider, Marisa Anderson, William Tyler and more) to curate a series of digital releases that will culminate next year in a double LP compilation of stellar sonic explorations.”
Big Ears Festival
“Their influence extended through Across the Horizon, a residency curated by SUSS that brought together a diverse group of artists connected less by genre than by a shared spirit of exploration. Across multiple performances, musicians traced different paths through folk traditions, ambient music, pedal steel experimentation, and instrumental storytelling. The result was a portrait of a creative community.”
